    SELF-DUAL ANYONS IN UNIFORM BACKGROUND FIELDS

    We study relativistic self-dual Chern-Simons-Higgs systems in the presence of uniform background fields that explicitly break CTP. A rich, but discrete vacuum structure is found when the gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken, while the symmetric phase can have an infinite vacuum degeneracy at tree level. The latter is due to the proliferation of neutral solitonic states that cost zero energy. Various novel self-dual solitons, such as these, are found in both the symmetric and the asymmetric phases. Also by considering a similar system on a two-sphere and the subsequent large sphere limit, we isolate sensible and finite expressions for the conserved angular and linear momenta, which satisfy anomalous commutation relations.     On the controllability of bimodal piecewise linear systems

    This paper studies controllability of bimodal systems that consist of two linear dynamics on each side of a given hyperplane. We show that the controllability properties of these systems can be inferred from those of linear systems for which the inputs are constrained in a certain way.     Massless monopoles and the moduli space approximation

    We investigate the applicability of the moduli space approximation in theories with unbroken non-Abelian gauge symmetries. Such theories have massless magnetic monopoles that are manifested at the classical level as clouds of non-Abelian field surrounding one or more massive monopoles. Using an SO(5) example with one massive and one massless monopole, we compare the predictions of the moduli space approximation with the results of a numerical solution of the full field equations. We find that the two diverge when the cloud velocity becomes of order unity. After this time the cloud profile approximates a spherical wavefront moving at the speed of light. In the region well behind this wavefront the moduli space approximation continues to give a good approximation to the fields. We therefore expect it to provide a good description of the motion of the massive monopoles and of the transfer of energy between the massive and massless monopoles.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figure

    Preliminary test of group acceptance and commitment therapy on obsessive-compulsive disorder for patients on optimal dose of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors

    The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of adding group acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) to adults diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) who were already on an optimal dose of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Forty-six Iranian women, on SSRIs, were randomized to group ACT + SSRI or continued SSRI conditions. SSRI dosages stayed stable during the study. Assessments included the Structured Clinical Interview (SCID-I), Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale Self report (Y-BOCS-SR), Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), Ruminative Response Scale (RRS), and Acceptance and Action Questionnaire (AAQ-II). The results showed significant reductions on the Y-BOCS-SR and BDI-II in both conditions at posttreatment with significantly greater reductions in the ACT + SSRI condition at follow-up. The RRS and AAQ-II saw significant improvements in the ACT + SSRI condition at posttreatment and follow-up compared to the SSRI condition. Results provide cross-cultural support for group ACT as a treatment for OCD and as a successful adjunct to SSRI treatment. © 201

    Pion and kaon physics with improved staggered quarks

    We compute pseudoscalar meson masses and decay constants using staggered quarks on lattices with three flavors of sea quarks and lattice spacings 0.12\approx 0.12 fm and 0.09\approx 0.09 fm. We fit partially quenched results to ``staggered chiral perturbation theory'' formulae, thereby taking into account the effects of taste-symmetry violations. Chiral logarithms are observed. From the fits we calculate fπf_\pi and fKf_K, extract Gasser-Leutwyler parameters of the chiral Lagrangian, and (modulo rather large perturbative errors) find the light and strange quark masses.Comment: Lattice2003(spectrum); 3 pages, 1 eps figur

    Nonperturbative Effects from the Resummation of Perturbation Theory

    Using the general argument in Borel resummation of perturbation theory that links the divergent perturbation theory to the nonperturbative effect we argue that the nonperturbative effect associated with the perturbation theory should have a branch cut only along the positive real axis in the complex coupling plane. The component in the weak coupling expansion of the nonperturbative amplitude, which usually includes the leading term in the weak coupling expansion, that gives rise to the branch cut can be calculated in principle from the perturbation theory combined with some exactly calculable properties of the nonperturbative effect. The realization of this mechanism is demonstrated in the double well potential and the two-dimensional O(N) nonlinear sigma model. In these models the leading term in weak coupling of the nonperturbative effect can be obtained with good accuracy from the first terms of the perturbation theory. Applying this mechanism to the infrared renormalon induced nonperturbative effect in QCD, we suggest some of the QCD condensate effects can be calculated in principle from the perturbation theory.Comment: 21 Pages, 1 Figure; To appear in Phys Rev

    First Colonization of a Spectral Outpost in Random Matrix Theory

    We describe the distribution of the first finite number of eigenvalues in a newly-forming band of the spectrum of the random Hermitean matrix model. The method is rigorously based on the Riemann-Hilbert analysis of the corresponding orthogonal polynomials. We provide an analysis with an error term of order N^(-2 h) where 1/h = 2 nu+2 is the exponent of non-regularity of the effective potential, thus improving even in the usual case the analysis of the pertinent literature. The behavior of the first finite number of zeroes (eigenvalues) appearing in the new band is analyzed and connected with the location of the zeroes of certain Freud polynomials. In general all these newborn zeroes approach the point of nonregularity at the rate N^(-h) whereas one (a stray zero) lags behind at a slower rate of approach. The kernels for the correlator functions in the scaling coordinate near the emerging band are provided together with the subleading term: in particular the transition between K and K+1 eigenvalues is analyzed in detail.Comment: 32 pages, 8 figures (typo corrected in Formula 4.13); some reference added and minor correction
